Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships this year.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge specific calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
